Administrative Data Environments at U-M

Administrative Data Environments at U-M

University of Michigan Administrative Data is Stored in Three Places

Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) Databases, where all data entry is performed, are also known as the "production" or "operational" databases. They include:

  • FINPROD: M-Pathways Financial and Physical Resources systems. All financial and physical resources data entry and processing occurs in FINPROD, accessible on the Web through Wolverine Access.
  • HEPROD: M-Pathways Human Resource Management and Student Administration systems. "HE" stands for Higher Education. All human resource, payroll, and student data entry and processing occurs in HEPROD, accessible on the Web through Wolverine Access.
  • DB2: Development/Alumni Constituency (DAC) system that runs on the ITS mainframe.

Operational Data Store (ODS), a read-only copy of the OLTP that is updated every night except Saturday, is used to run standard reports without competing with real-time OLTP transactions. The ODS databases are accessible on the Web through Wolverine Access and include:

  • FinODS: M-Pathways Financial and Physical Resources systems.
  • HEODS: M-Pathways Human Resource Management and Student Administration systems.

U-M Data Warehouse includes data sets that contain reformatted data from both historical and current systems. The data is from M-Pathways systems, from legacy systems that preceded M-Pathways, and from the Development/Alumni Constituency System. The U-M Data Warehouse, which is accessible on the Web through Wolverine Access, provides read-only data that supports two types of reporting:

  • Ad hoc querying and analysis conducted by users who want to construct their own reports.
  • Predefined reports, which are written to meet specific needs and saved for repeated use, as is or with modifications.

Relationship Between the OLTP, ODS, and the U-M Data Warehouse

The administrative data environments at U-M supports different tasks. Characteristics include:

Online Transaction Processing System (OLTP)
Operational Data Store (ODS)
U-M Data Warehouse (DW)
Supports critical University business processes.
Offers real-time transaction processing in all data areas.
Always current.
Offers some predefined, user-requested reports.
Accessed from PeopleSoft via Wolverine Access, except for DAC System, which is accessed via CICS.
Offers report data outside of OLTP, to optimize OLTP performance.
Is a copy of OLTP for all data areas except Development (DAC System).
Refreshed nightly except for Saturday.
Primary repository for predefined reports based on data in the OLTP.
Accessed via Wolverine Access.
Read-only, reformatted data for all data areas simplifies data structures and optimizes data accessibility.
Refresh schedule varies by data set.
Primary repository for ad hoc inquiry and reporting.
Contains some predefined reports.
Accessed from BusinessObjects via Wolverine Access.
